Studying together is so 2016! Studying alone is what we used to do back in the day, when there was not much possibility of doing things together outside the classroom. Before we had the internet, studying together involved gathering in the same location, maybe visiting each other’s house or staying at the library together. Nowadays, you can study together literally anywhere.
1. Read out loud when studying together
Studying together, gives you an opportunity to read out the content to your study mates (in person or via Skype). This enhances your long-term memory because you also save the information auditorily. This means that hearing information, in addition to seeing it, helps you memorise it better. Studies suggest you are 50% more likely to memorise it when you read something out loud!
2. Practice with other people’s explanations and questions
To see if you have thoroughly understood the study content, try to use other people’s notes, summaries and flashcards. For example, eFaqt is a tool that you can use to create, share and practice notes and flashcards online. Understanding other people’s content, and answering other flashcards correctly, shows that you comprehend the content even if it is phrased in different ways. Chances are big you would answer your exam questions right as well!
3. Explain with your own words
Explaining material to study mates in your own words shows that you are able to communicate your study content properly. If others understand your explanations, you are likely to explain your answers clearly on your exams too!
4. More ideas and insights
When studying together, you get ideas and information from your peers that you probably have not considered before. With others, you encounter problems that you might have overlooked otherwise, but together you can shed light on them!
5. Boost your motivation
Research shows that the presence of others can boost your motivation to study and wrok harder. This suggests that studying together makes you more efficient and effective than when you study alone…maybe everyone is a bit of a show off ;)
6. So, why should I study together with someone?
