1.It Damages the Memory
Dr. Charles Czeisler, chairman of the board of the National Sleep Foundation and chief of sleep medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, says that, unless we sleep on the information we learn during the day, it will not integrate into our long term memory. This can decrease our ability to remember things.
2.It Causes Depression
Not sleeping enough can cause us to overreact to negative experiences and will allow depression to settle in. One of the reasons is that the lack of sleeping disrupts the activity of the frontal lobe, which is known to help regulate the emotions.
3.It Can Cause Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association has done research that shows how sleep deprivation can decrease the level of insulin in our bodies. As a result, the blood sugar levels increase, potentially causing diabetes.
4.It Weakens the Immune System
Many studies reveal that sleep deprivation can damage our immune system. As a result, viruses will be able to attack our bodies more easily. Plus, it can even make us less responsive to vaccines.
5.It Encourages Obesity
To regulate our appetite, our bodies require two types of hormones: leptin and ghrelin. When we don’t sleep enough, we produce more ghrelin and less leptin, which makes us hungrier. Thus, scientists have discovered that after pulling an all-nighter, our bodies actually increase in size.
