That’s it. It’s done. You’ve nailed your final exams. You’ve got your grades, you’ve got your high school diploma, and now the only thing you can think about is going to college.
You know what you want to study. You know that you want to study it abroad. And you know you have to start the application process soon.
But what you don’t know is…
Where on earth will you go?
Because chances are you’re going to have to stick with your choice for a few years. And if you don’t like it, it’s not going to be a very pleasant journey for you.
So you’d better make the right decision.
Is there a step-by-step guide to finding the perfect college for you? Or is it that you have to spend hours and hours researching and staring in bewilderment?
Deciding on a college can be terrifying. And the bad news is nobody can do it for you.
So you have to take the reins in your hands and do it yourself. And if you are, in fact, looking for that step-by-step guide, here’s one that helped me decide what college to choose.
The Place Where Your Dream College Is Probably Hiding (and How to Sneak in)
In the best scenario, you have an idea of what courses you would like to study for the next three or four years. And you may have a few Universities in mind, but you don’t know much about them other than what information they offer on their websites.
And let’s face it. The sites won’t tell you much, except what they want you to know. Each University is waiting to grasp at the chance of seeing you on the enrollment lists. They all claim to be the best, but none of them can actually prove it to you.
Which is why you are so confused in the first place.
So what you can do is dig a little bit deeper to find out the pros and cons of studying at a particular University. And I was lucky enough to find a trusted website that can do it for me.
If you haven’t heard of it already, the site is called Top Universities. Every year they create a University Guide based on precise research and analysis in which they rank all the Universities in the world upon student satisfaction, size, age, academic reputation, and job placement success.
All you have to do is choose the course that you want to study, and the Guide will show you the most influential colleges in that field. Kind of cool, right?
Even so, it doesn’t matter how awesome your potential dream college is if you can’t afford to live in the city where it is located. And if you haven’t had the chance to visit this town before, there’s a big chance you don’t know the costs of living there.
How to Calculate the Exact Living Costs at your Dream University
As long as you have this useful tool at your disposal, you can compare the monthly costs in your current city to the ones in college.
I’ve done a price comparison test between London and Bucharest. If I spend 200 Euros monthly in Bucharest, to maintain the same standard of life in London, I would have to spend around 697 Euros. The difference is huge, and I would certainly not afford to study there.
The calculations are based on rent, restaurant prices, groceries prices, transportation, clothing, and other utilities, as well as the average monthly salary.
So before filling the walls of your room with photos and flyers of your dream college, don’t forget to use the Numbeo Calculator.
And even with low living costs, you still have to consider one more thing before making up your mind – that you like the country in which you’re about to move.
How to Make Sure You Will Spend Your Student Life in the Right Country
The city in which your dream college is may remain your home for a long time after finishing your studies. It’s not a fact, but a possibility which you need to take into account.
In other words, you have to make sure that you can adapt to the new environment. Because if you can’t, you will probably never feel like you belong there.
So start by thinking about the places that you have visited before. What did you enjoy about them? What did you tolerate? What did you find unbearable?
Write them down and analyze the new location with pros and cons. And if it seems like a perfect fit, this is where the fun begins.
Go to YouTube, and start looking for students who record their lives at the university you want to study. You can watch their videos, see for yourself how it’s like to live there and get more familiar with the surroundings.
And if you’re like me, you’ll probably spend a lot of time watching those videos because you can’t control your excitement.
Bonus Tip: If you register at Top Universities, you will have the chance to join the free student forums. Whatever questions you may have, the other registered students will respond quickly with tips from their experiences. The topics you’ll find there are various, and they include lifestyle-related or course related questions and more.
